Geodynamic monitoring tasks
- Observation system design. Development of geodynamic monitoring programs taking into account the geological structure of the territory, deposit characteristics, and production conditions. Selection of the optimal observation network composition and instrumentation.
- Field measurements/remote observations. Regular instrumental observations of deformation and seismic processes using a combination of geodetic and geophysical methods. Determination of ground displacements using GNSS technologies, measurement of vertical deformations of the ground surface, gravity variations, recording and analysis of seismic activity at the deposit site, etc.
- Analysis and interpretation of measurement data. Comprehensive processing of monitoring results using GIS technologies, mathematical modeling, and machine learning to identify trends and patterns in geodynamic changes.
- Assessment and forecast of subsoil conditions. Identification of hazardous geodynamic zones and prognostic assessment of deformation processes. Development of practical recommendations for the safe operation of facilities.
- Development of a unified database for long-term monitoring. Creation and maintenance of an information system for the accumulation, analysis, and storage of data for long-term geodynamic support of projects.
- Preparation of reporting documentation. Systematization and presentation of observation results, analytical conclusions, and the development of methodological and technical solutions in the form of reports submitted to supervisory and regulatory authorities.
Project examples
Geodynamic monitoring of the Karazhanbas field.
In 2024, the GEOKEN Research and Production Center completed geodynamic monitoring of the Karazhanbas field and developed a geodynamic monitoring program for the period 2024–2028. The program was developed taking into account the regulatory requirements of the Republic of Kazakhstan and modern methodological approaches used in geodynamic studies at hydrocarbon fields. The monitoring package in 2024 included Class II accuracy leveling, satellite (GNSS), and gravimetric measurements, ensuring high accuracy and reliability of the obtained data. Analysis of the results of long-term observations allowed us to assess the potential geodynamic risk and possible negative consequences of long-term oil field development and promptly address industrial and environmental safety issues, thereby ensuring the geodynamic safety of the entire hydrocarbon production complex at the field.
Comprehensive geodynamic monitoring of the subsoil in the Mangystau region
In 2020, the company successfully implemented the project "Comprehensive Geodynamic Monitoring of Subsoil Conditions at the West Tenge, Tasbolat, Aktas, and South Zhetybai Fields" in the Mangystau Region for the Kazakh Gas Processing Plant. The project's objective was to identify patterns in the occurrence and spatiotemporal development of various forms of natural and man-made geodynamics in the subsoil, i.e., to establish the nature and mechanism of the relationships between these manifestations and spatiotemporal changes in development parameters at the West Tenge, Tasbolat, Aktas, and South Zhetybai fields. The project identified geodynamic risk factors of natural and man-made origin at the aforementioned fields. Long-term geodynamic observations were analyzed, the history of geodynamic testing sites was studied, the quality of work performed was assessed, and other aspects were assessed. The results obtained allowed us to identify trends in the spatiotemporal development of deformation processes and prepare recommendations for the safe operation of the fields.
Development of a Comprehensive Geodynamic Monitoring Program
In 2018, GEOKEN Scientific and Production Center developed a comprehensive geodynamic monitoring program to assess and prevent the risk of seismic deformation processes associated with the development of the Karachaganak oil and gas condensate field for the period 2019-2024. The goal of monitoring the geoenvironment is to ensure the geodynamic safety of the systems and facilities of the oil and gas production complex of Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. During the course of the work, an analysis of previous studies and the experience of observing geodynamic processes was conducted. Based on the functioning of the continuous monitoring system for natural and natural-man-made seismic deformation processes, an assessment of the geoenvironment was performed. Based on the findings, taking into account the information content, progressiveness, and economic feasibility, the hardware, metrological support, and software package for geodynamic monitoring at the Karachaganak field were recommended.
Development of a “Program for conducting comprehensive geodynamic monitoring of natural and man-made processes at the Severnye Buzachi oil and gas field for 2017–2021”
As part of the project to develop a "Program for Conducting Comprehensive Geodynamic Monitoring of Natural and Man-Made Processes at the Severnye Buzachi Oil and Gas Field for 2017-2021," work was completed on geodynamic ranking of the Severnye Buzachi field territory, identifying geodynamic risk zones and areas using a combination of geodynamic research methods, taking into account geological and production data. Recommendations were also substantiated for optimizing the prospective placement of systems and facilities within the field, thereby preventing potential geodynamic-related emergencies.
